The bite is getting better

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Hey guys I will say I was able to finally see some snook hooked up science the front on Thur. My guys hooked a few and also got them on shrimp and gulp was a good feeling. The trout have been hitting real good but the sheep head are back to being a pain in the…… But there’s alot of rat reds running around on weds my guys hook about 30 of them and on Thurs They didn’t hit as much  . When the tide got  high enough we hit the flats and then we hit the deep holes on some of the Islands and hit just about every thing on  the front side of the Island it held most of the trout and rat reds . We also got the snook more on the inside of the keys with rats mix in. But I was happy to see a snook hooked.

Also talk to a few other captains and anglers that fished this last week and every body did hooked a few snook so that’s a real good sign. But it looked like Thursday was the day the snook chewed  the best so hopefully we start to hear more fish being caught. Here are a few more pics of this past week’s  fish and also the frist snook I have seen hooked snice before the front.

The cold and the fish

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Cold weather and southern fish do not go well with each other,

How ever it is not the end of the world or the end of fishing, unless you believe the media, dopey buggers they are. the world is not ending.
Myself and one of the best bioloiogist in the state independant of each other came up with these numbers Bad yes catastrophic no.
he thinks 25% fish kill, me I think 30%, No- one will know until the summer sampling is done. by the use of nets, and electric shock, the scientist count how many fish in an area.
Then some guess work is involoved by expanding those numbers to the surrounding areas.
This data was collected last year and for the last several years.
only after this years is done will any one know haw bad this cold kill was.

The other number that is important is depth, I was thinking 3 feet he was thinking 4 feet, that is how deep of water a fish had to be in to survive the cold, Fresh water can only get to 32 degrees or it turns to ice, salt water can get much colder as salt dose not freeze.

Fish caught in 2 feet of water had a body temperature of 29 degrees or in other words they died. the north winds blew much of the water out of charlotte Harbor, which caused low water levels in places like turtle bay, heavy kills in this area proves the point. But many fish leave these shallow bays as the tide falls not wanting to be trapping as the water runs out, so many of the snook and reds headed to deeper water as the tide was dropping.
I have to wait on a customer I will be back and finish this thought when I get the chance.

FWC Follow-up

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Just to clarify what the link to FWC in the previous entry says, for those of us to lazy to go look at it.Pretty much all it says is that there will be no spring snook season for sure and that possibly could be extended further if after studying the effects of the cold weather spell, they decide that there have been too many snook die to sustain an open season. The rest of the story is that by executive order fishing for tarpon and bonefish is also prohibited through at least March 31st.Gonna make for some rough fishing the next couple of months, but FWC is doing what they think is right to protect our fisheries.Much as I hate to,I have to agree with them.Stay tuned for further developments.                   Greg

Some pics from this week fishing

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Hey sorry I haven’t been on for a few weeks but everybody knows the weather  was just really bad. So here I  am I have the books full of fishing charters all booked up and the weather is just bad and trying to explain to my charters the fishing is just going to be bad and I know it was. so was able to move a few and  the first day I took a trip out was wednesday jan the 13   And we hooked nothing but trout all day which for me that sucks cause in my head I wanted to put my guys on reds and sheep head also but every where we went the fish just didn’t want to bite we could still see some that did make it and didn’t die off. But they knew it was going to be that way. So the next day we head out and the same thing trout after trout all day long. So for Friday’s trip I really tried to talk my guy out of doing the trip. but he been looking forward to this for a while . And I told him I really don’t want to take you for a ride. So he goes hey could we  do this I’ll pay for gas and bait and the if  fish bite then I’ll pay you the full prices .So I told him deal that was good cause I could go try new areas and try to  find fish that wanted to eat. So the first spot very first cast he hooks a 24 inch red  the 2nd fish was a black drum 3rd was a big sheep head and I was like dam 3 shrimp 3 fish I Was like kool. So  we hit 3 docks and it was fish after fish He looks at me and says Dam I guess I have to pay and goes you call this a slow day. I go HELL NO THIS IS THE BESTI have had in the last 3 days so that to show’s you just don’t know.He took a few fish for dinner that day And goes hey I want to come back and do this when the bite is on. He hook about 19 reds from rats to bulls got about 16 big sheep heads and hook about 7 black drums And trout the trout I tryed to stay away from after seeing them for the last 2 days,So the fishing was off the hook. I was using shrimp on a 1/4 red jig head for the reds and the black drum and the sheep heads on a size 1/o owner hook with a small # 5 size split shot about 10inches up form the hook. I took 9 dz shrimp with us and used every one.  to my self I was like was it the weather and the water warming up the 5 degrees Or was it that I hit a new area who knows. But  today I hit some of the spots from the other day and we also hook fish there. so I guess the water warming up is whats making the fish bite. So guys as the water keeps warming up the better the bite will be. Now for snook I WILL NOT MESS WITH UNTILL A FEW MORE DAYS So They  could recover a little better.                                                               Capt.Angel   www.viciousstrikes.com

It’s the wind chill factor that’ll get ya…

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Hey all,

We I finally decided that today’s above 50 deg. weather would bring just enough warmth for the fish and I to have a nice reunion. I kinda figured they would be really hungry after the chill, and that I would have the right bait for their picnic weather lunch. Well the story starts after the frost melted off the lawn, and I felt it I could leave the house without the truck heater turned to max. I wheeled into Franks around 11 for a bucket of shrimp to have Robert tell me of the mass carnage involving most of the Southwest Florida fish species due to the cold snap.  I should have known it wasn’t fishing time yet…the door to Franks was closed when I pulled up, It’s usually open like a friendly gesture saying “come on in”. Well Robert mentioned he had the first shipment of shrimp for a day or two, and I figured if it was warm enough for the shrimp to swim; the big fish must be hungry. I grabbed the selects, and out the door I went. Thanks for the honesty about the fish Robert; glad you didn’t humor me like a used car salesman selling a lemon! You were right!

I stopped at the Harbor dock to see if there was any white bait…nothing. I overheard a few mullet fishermen grumbling about the cold, the lack of fish, and the cold again. So on my way I went to the Boca side of the trestle with my gear, coffee, and shrimp, and there I stayed for the next 3 hours. So it was me, the birds, and dolphin, and some friendly tourist passing by looking in my empty bucket and smiling. I did see a few snook floating along like they were on heavy medication, and a few other variety of fish belly up floating by, but the bites were few and far between. Pinfish seemed active as on the long case away from the dock the shrimp made a quick snack for them as they stripped it off the hook. Under the dock was no different, the sheepies must have been sleeping. All in all it was a nice day away from the desk, and something about the blue water just seems so comforting. But by 3pm, the breeze was finding every leak in my shirt, and even with the sun shinning; it was chilly. So away I went with a smile for shift change; the guys coming as I was going!

Come on warm weather!

Boca side of the trestle this weekend

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Just wanted to drop a short note on my last trip to the Boca trestle.

First I wanted to say that I’m disappointed that the Charlotte County Parks and Recreation commission has not put the portable toilets back at this location. I overheard a guy yell to his kid, “just go over there”…pointing to the side of the trestle. Fine for the 6yr old…but what about his sister? At a time when tourism is so important to the county; why not have a great family image?

Off the soapbox… I stopped at Franks for a couple doz. shrimp on Friday, and I’m glad I did. Tide was low at the harbor, and there were no greenbacks to be found. With my fishing wagon in tow, I made my way out to the Boca side of the fishing pier (trestle). No bait fish there either, so shrimp it was. I was hoping that with the full moon the previous night, and tide on the way in, that fishing should be good. After having a half doz. of shrimp nibbled off the hook by grunts and pin fish, I decided to fish under the trestle. I pulled up a nice keeper sheepshead, so I thought ” a few more of these baby’s and dinner’s on”. Well I wound up throwing about six undersized mix of sheepshead, and grouper back. The snapper didn’t even come out to play that afternoon. One guy at the end of the pier pulled out a nice mackerel, but not too much going on besides throwbacks.

All in all it was a nice warm day for December with a nice breeze, and like I tell my kids, “you can’t fish from a hospital bed, so enjoy the blessing of a day out…”

That’s all for this trip…and cold weather’s coming. See ya’ll next week…and if you bored…and cold…stop on by Everything Punta Gorda to find a warm spot for a bowl of soup or something.

Thanks again Frank for the forum!
