Gulf of Mexico bottom fishin & trolling -.

Reefs & Wrecks

Robert &  Capt. Josh  06/29/2024 — From shore to 20 miles out, mangrove and lane snapper are on structure, plus an odd yellowtail snapper. A handful of Spanish mackerel are around too. The bigger red grouper and red snapper are out from 125 to 180 feet. Some are solo and some are in groups, so look for "Christmas trees" on the bottom but don't overlook likely structure.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  06/22/2024 — Wind kept most boats inside, and most that got out didn't get past 10 miles. Spanish mackerel are out to 10 miles. Mangrove snapper, lane snapper, grunt and porgies. One permit hooked at the Power Poles reef.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  06/08/2024 — Red snapper, red grouper, a few African pompano, some beeliners (vermilion snapper), lots of lane snapper and some good mangrove snapper are out 45 to 70 miles. Expect to be in at least 150 feet of water if you want red snapper.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  06/01/2024 — The red grouper are in 100 to 140 feet of water. A few red snapper reported in 165 feet of water. Some good mangrove snapper too. Yellowtail snapper are getting better every week. Lots of lanes, including some bigger ones, starting at 12 miles. Some grunts and porgies too. A few barracuda have been popping up. ------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  05/25/2024 — The red grouper bite has been better in 100 to 120 feet. Short red snapper have been caught in 120 feet also. Mangrove and yellowtail snapper 20 to 30 miles out. Cobia of random sizes in random places. Barracuda showing up on the nearshore reefs. The more popular fishing spots have sharks hanging around. A few amberjack are in about 80 to 85 feet of water. There have been some Spanish mackerel 5 miles off Boca Grande Pass, and one angler trolling for them found some small mahi.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  05/11/2024 — Weather has been windy. Red grouper are in 100 to 120 feet. A few amberjack have also been in the at same range. Lots of lane and mangrove snapper from 15 to 30 miles out. A few undersize cobia and some bigger sharks. Spanish mackerel are from the passes out to about 15 miles, and there are some schoolie kingfish with them.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  04/27/2024 — Some Spanish mackerel from the surf out to 5 miles. The nearshore reefs haven't had much for bottom fish, but there are a few cobia. For better lane and mangrove snapper and porgies, move out to between 50 and 70 feet. Red grouper are decent in 100 to 120 feet.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  04/06/2024 — No reports due to the wind. The crystal ball says there may be red grouper in 80 to 110 feet. Yellowtail snapper and permit should be showing up. Spanish mackerel and kingfish action should be good out past the silty zone.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  03/23/2024 — A little bumpy this week, but we've heard red grouper in 90 to 110 feet of water and some big lane snapper in 50 to 75 feet. Grunts, porgies and sheepshead on the nearshore reefs. Kingfish are showing up from one mile off Boca Grande Pass out to about 15 miles, and also at the Venice Pier. Some Spanish mackerel have shown up as well.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  03/16/2024 — Weird out here. In 80 to 105 feet, we've had some red grouper and small mangrove snapper. Lane snapper, plus the occasional grunt or porgy, have been on 50 to 80 feet. The nearshore reefs have had some larger sheepshead, but not in large numbers. There's a bunch of amberjack around the Mohawk. Mackerel and kingfish are in the near future.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  03/09/2024 — Despite more wind than forecast, there are red grouper in 90 to 110 feet, plus a few mangrove snapper. In 50 to 60 feet, there have more mangrove snapper, lane snapper, porgies and grunts. A few Spanish mackerel have been seen jumping, and there are pods of bonita just starting to show up.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  02/24/2024 — The red grouper are in 80 to 105 feet of water. Some African pompano have been reported as shallow as 90 feet. Good mangrove snapper (up to 5 pounds) are in that same depth range. From 4 to 15 miles out, we're hearing lane snapper, grunts and sheepshead.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  02/17/2024 — In 80 to 110 feet, there have been some red grouper. Some mangrove snapper, mostly small but keepers. Bunches of lane snapper. A few porgies and grunts, plus good numbers of sheepshead, in 30 to 60 feet. One keeper cobia was reported in 80 or 90 feet of water.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  02/10/2024 — It was lovely last weekend. Some African pompano at 150ish feet. In 80 to 110 feet of water, lots of red grouper up to 28 inches and mangrove snapper up to 5 pounds. At 15 miles, lane snapper, porgies, grunts and a few sheepshead, but the sheepshead are better on the nearshore reefs.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  01/27/2024 — Nobody is back yet to report.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  01/13/2024 — Very few boats have been out. A few legal red grouper were reported at 25 to 30 miles out, along with a bunch of lanes and a few mangroves. Lanes, grunts and porgies were also caught at 18 miles. Novak, Tremblay and the Palm Island Ferry reefs had some sheepshead.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  12/30/2023 — Weather has been tough. Tremblay, Helen's and the Power Pole reef have been producing sheepshead, small grunts and short mangrove snapper.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  12/16/2023 — No reports.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  12/09/2023 — Sheepshead are on all the nearshore reefs. A few flounder have been hooked around the reefs. Mangrove and lane snapper, plus grunts and porgies, have been at 15 to 20 miles. Spanish and king mackerel are within casting distance of the beach but mostly 1 to 5 miles out.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  12/02/2023 — Spanish mackerel from the passes out to about 15 miles. A handful of kingfish up to about 30 inches are around. Lane and mangrove snapper, a few flounder and a big piles of sheepshead have been on the nearshore reefs (Tremblay, Palm Island, etc).

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  11/25/2023 — From the beach out to 15 miles, we're seeing Spanish mackerel. Some smaller kingfish up to 30 inches are mixed with them and have been caught trolling or drifting. Grunts, porgies, lane snapper and mangrove snapper are in about 40 to 80 feet. The nearshore reefs have had quite a few sheepshead caught on shrimp. A few out-of-season flounder have been caught.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  11/18/2023 — Spanish mackerel and a random smattering of kingfish from the shoreline out to about 20 miles. Mangrove, lane and a few yellowtail snapper from 15 to 25 miles out. Barracuda are on all the reefs and wrecks. A blackfin tuna was caught on a freelined bait near the Mohawk.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  11/11/2023 — Spanish mackerel and kingfish are from the passes out to about 8 miles. Bottom fishing has been netting lots of lane snapper along with a few mangroves plus grunts and porgies from 8 to 25 miles. A few cobia have been spotted but not caught.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  11/05/2023 — It's been a bit too windy for most folks. We can expect Spanish and king mackerel from the passes out to about 25 miles, and a mixed bag of lane and mangrove snapper in about 60 feet.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  10/28/2023 — Spanish mackerel from the beaches out to about 15 miles and a few kingfish from 10 to 25 miles. Random bonita schools have been reported too. Lane and mangrove snapper plus good grunts and porgies are at about 15 miles. A few tripletail have been reported around the stone crab trap floats.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  10/14/2023 — Weather has kept most boats in, but we heard about some bonita and Spanish mackerel around the School Bus reef. We also heard a few mangrove and yellowtail snapper.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  10/07/2023 — Some nice lane snapper and grunts 25 miles out of Boca Grande, and there are Spanish mackerel around the passes. But wind has let a lot of boats in.

Capt. Josh & Fishin' Frank 10/03/23  — Bonita are schooling out a few miles off the beach. Try to cast to the edges of schools with small lures (pompano jigs, small Kastmaster-type spoons). Blackfin tuna may be under the bonita; let the lure sink if you want one. Nearshore reefs producing snapper and grunts, along with short grouper. Better fish at 80 feet; even better at 120. Red snapper are in at least 100 feet, and be ready to move around to less-used spots. Gags are deep also.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  09/16/2023 — At 15 to 20 miles there's lane, mangrove and yellowtail snapper, plus some grunts and porgies, plus short red grouper. At 45 to 70 miles, the weekend red snapper have been very good, with fish up to 20 pounds, and gag grouper up to 30 pounds. Some true black grouper and scamp have also been caught this week. Blackfin tuna and bonita are out at 50 or 60 miles, and probably closer if you're looking.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  09/09/2023 — Not much, really. Mangrove and lane snapper along with some grunts and porgies at 20 to 30 miles. No red snapper or keeper gags reported — too sporty.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  09/02/2023 — Small red grouper and lots of grunts reported 9 miles off Boca Grande Pass.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  07/22/2023 — Red grouper are closed now. Reports were decent in 120 to 160 feet of water before that. Red snapper close at the end of the month; best reports have been in 150 to 180 feet. A few anglers have been heading out past 200 feet and reporting some scamp and black grouper along with the red snapper. Mangrove snapper in the 20-inch range have been caught too. Blitzing bonita have been spotted at the surface and there may be blackfin tuna mixed in. Some small mahi have been reported also, but not enough to really be excited about.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  07/15/2023 — Starting at the farthest point, from 60 to 70 miles we've heard about red snapper and some decent red grouper (the last day for red grouper is July 20). Lane, vermilion and mangrove snapper are all biting, but they're divided by species because it's the spawning period. There are also some yellowtail snapper, but anglers have been reporting fewer than they expected. Some peanut mahi and schools of bonito have been reported. Sharks are busy on all the reefs.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  07/01/2023 — Red snapper are good 60 to 70 miles out, with lots of 20-pounders. Anglers heading off Englewood, Venice and Sarasota are doing better than those going south. Some good mangrove snapper have also been caught. The snapper are segregating themselves in preparation for the spawn. A few good red grouper have been caught, but even at 50 miles we're hearing mostly shorts. Some mahi have been spotted. Bonita are blitzing out there.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  06/24/2023 — It's been pretty windy, but a few reports have come in. Some good red snapper have been caught at 70 miles, and there are decent fish as close in as 45 miles. A few yellowtail and lane snapper also. Legal red grouper have been scarce, but a few speckled hind (strawberry grouper) have also been caught.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  06/10/2023 — Within 20 miles, grunts, porgies, sheepshead and short snapper. At 20 to 35 miles, lots of nice lane snapper and a few mangroves (but good ones). The red grouper bite has been lousy. Red snapper in 130 to 190 feet of water off Sarasota, Venice and Fort Myers. One blackfin tuna reported.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  06/03/2023 — Spanish mackerel are from the passes out to about 15 miles. At 15 miles, we're seeing grunts, porgies, lanes and mangrove snapper. Out deeper, a couple red grouper, but not many.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  05/20/2023 — At 15 to 20 miles, we have lane and mangrove snapper, grunts. porgies and sheepshead. Red grouper are not good; even boats going out to 30 or 35 miles are struggling to limit, but they are getting a few yellowtail snapper. A few sailfish spotted. One reports of tiny mahi. Big sharks and jewfish on most of the reefs and wrecks. The occasional cobia.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  05/13/2023 — Red grouper fishing sucks right now, for reasons not fully understood. But the mangrove and lane snapper are doing great at 25 to 30 miles, along with some yellowtail snapper. A few cobia randomly popping up. Sheepshead, grunts and porgies at the Palm Island Ferry and some other reefs. Troll a skirted bait between reefs and see if you can hook a sailfish (seriously).

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  03/25/2023 — Spanish mackerel are from Venice to Sanibel, from the passes out to 8 miles. Snapper, grunts and porgies are on the nearshore reefs and hard bottom. Sheepshead action has been very good, with some XXL fish caught. Some kingfish are around, so consider trolling as you move from spot to spot especially if there is bait around. Red grouper fishing has been a little disappointing due to wind, but also gags are in some of the red grouper spots. It might get better when they re-open past 120 feet on April 1.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  03/18/2023 — The Novak Reef has had some small yellowtail snapper. The Palm Island Ferry and Tremblay are holding sheepshead. Red grouper have been reported at 30 to 35 miles. Overall, windy weather has kept a lot of offshore boats in port.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  03/11/2023 — From 8 to 10 miles, we've head scattered red tide. Most anglers are going out to at least 15 miles if the weather allows. Red grouper in 90 to 110 feet. Mangrove snapper plus a few lanes and yellowtails are eating shrimp, sardines and squid in 60 to 90 feet. Small kingfish are in 60 to 90 feet also. No tripletail reports.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  03/04/2023 — Red tide is patchy within 10 miles. Out past that, there are grunts, porgies, sheepshead, and mangrove and lane snapper. Bigger snapper, plus decent red grouper, are out closer to 30 miles. A few kingfish reports, but not big ones. Try trolling a lipped plug. Kings are as far north as Tampa Bay. Blitzing bonita schools have been sighted. A couple undersize cobia. No tripletail reports.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  02/18/2023 — The red grouper have been decent in 80 to 110 feet of water, along with some mangrove and lane snapper. In 60 feet or better, epect to catch some smaller lanes along with grunts and porgies. The nearshore reefs have had sheepshead. Spanish mackerel are from the beaches out to about 15 miles. The temperature is right for kingfish, but none reported. Tripletail reports don't exist.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  02/11/2023 — Few reports due to weather. However, we've heard red grouper in 80 to 110 feet; and grunts, porgies and snapper in about 60 feet. The nearshore reefs (Mary's, Helen's, etc) have also been producing good numbers of sheepshead.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  02/04/2023 — Good red grouper in 75 to 110 feet (closed outside the 20-fathom curve until April 1). In closer (50 to 80 feet), the mangrove and lane snapper are good, along with grunts and porgies. Some short cobia have been caught also. Tripletail are pretty much zilch.

------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  01/28/2023 — Grunts and porgies are OK from 3 to 15 miles, and you'll get some small snappers. 15 to 25 miles gets you better snapper, including some yellowtails. 25 to 40 miles is where you want to be for keeper red grouper.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  01/21/2023 — Not much trolling, but grunts, porgies and a few mangrove snapper are in close. At 15 to 20 miles, we're hearing vermilion and lane snapper too, plus a few yellowtails. Red grouper at 25 to 35 miles. A random few cobia have popped up.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  01/07/2023 — Weather has kept most in, but there are lane snapper, mangrove snapper and grunts out about 15 miles.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  08/29/2022 — Red grouper are closed for the year. Mangrove, lane and yellowtail snapper in 120 feet of water. In 145 feet, African pompano and almaco jacks have been caught. Bonita are 15 to 25 miles out, but no blackfin tuna.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  08/13/2022 — Red grouper are feeding in 90 to 110 feet. Gags are as shallow as 60 feet but not too many. Lane and yellowtail snapper have been on the nearshore ledges. Lots of bonita from 7 to 30 miles, and there have to be blackfin tuna under some of those pods. Barracuda reports are good, grunts and porgies are OK.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Robert &  Capt. Josh  07/30/2022 — Red snapper in about 150 feet, along with scamp, red grouper and bigger mangrove snapper. In 75 to 110 feet, there are smaller red grouper, yellowtail and lane snapper. Mahi and bonita reports exist but are inconsistent. Nearshore reefs have barracuda, small grunts and a couple permit.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  07/23/2022 — Red snapper, red grouper and gags in 140 to 160 feet. A couple bonita and blackfin tuna out there. Sailfish sighted but not hooked. A couple African pompano caught as well. Mangrove, lane and yellowtail snapper are in 75 to 100 feet; lots of chum will get them going. Nearshore reefs have barracuda, small grunts and a couple rumored permit.

Robert &  Capt. Josh  07/02/2022 — Bigger red snapper reports in 140 to 160 feet, plus some gags and red grouper. You'll start catching smaller red snapper in about 125 feet. A few African pompano and blackfin tuna way offshore. Lane, vermilion, yellowtail and mangrove snapper are highly segregated on the reefs due to their ongoing spawn. Barracuda are on every reef from 3 miles out. Permit are on the wrecks, but what we've hearing is smaller fish and not very consistent.
